How to Grow & Harvest Milkweed

When to Plant

Sow your Milkweed seeds in early spring. These can take a while to germinate, so feel free to start them quite early in the spring season or even in late winter indoors or in a greenhouse with a heat mat.

How to Plant

When growing Milkweed, it's best to use the cold stratification method before sowing. To do this, place your Milkweed seeds inside a moist paper towel, inside a zip-lock bag. Place it in the fridge for around 30 days. Plant in 2-3" inches of peat moss that is moist and well drained. Place in a sunny, warm location and you should start to see germination anywhere between 1-2 months. Once your plants are 2-3 inches tall it's time to transplant them outside into a sunny location, careful not to disturb the roots at all which can stunt the growth of the plant.
