    Sprouts/Microgreens - Onion

    From $499 USD
    View details

    Description

Onion sprouts and microgreens are increasingly popular among indoor gardeners due to their rapid growth and nutritional benefits. These small, tender plants are not only easy to cultivate but also provide a fresh addition to various dishes. This guide will provide insights into the process of growing onion sprouts and microgreens indoors, focusing on the necessary conditions, techniques, and benefits.

Onion sprouts typically germinate within 7 to 14 days, making them an excellent choice for those seeking a quick harvest.

Soak the seeds in water for a few hours before planting can enhance germination rates, as it allows the seeds to absorb moisture and initiate the sprouting process.

For indoor cultivation, a shallow tray filled with a growing medium, such as potting soil or coconut coir, is recommended. The medium should be moistened but not overly saturated, as excess water can lead to mold growth. Once the seeds are evenly spread across the surface, a light layer of soil can be added to cover them. Maintaining a consistent moisture level is crucial during the germination phase.

Light is another critical factor in the successful growth of onion sprouts and microgreens. They require approximately 12 to 16 hours of light daily. Natural sunlight is ideal, but if this is not available, using fluorescent or LED grow lights can effectively supplement their needs. Positioning the lights about 2 to 4 inches above the plants will help prevent leggy growth while ensuring adequate light exposure.

Temperature also plays a significant role in the growth of onion sprouts. A range of 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) is optimal for germination and growth. Monitoring the temperature and adjusting the environment as necessary will promote healthy development. Additionally, good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal diseases, which can be a concern in indoor settings.

Harvesting onion sprouts and microgreens can begin once they reach about 2 to 4 inches in height, typically within 10 to 20 days after planting. Using scissors, cut the sprouts just above the soil line. This method allows for a clean harvest while minimizing damage to the remaining roots, which may allow for a second harvest if conditions are favorable.

Incorporating onion sprouts and microgreens into your diet can provide numerous health benefits. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to overall well-being. Additionally, growing these plants indoors can enhance your culinary experience, providing fresh flavors and textures to salads, sandwiches, and garnishes.

In conclusion, growing onion sprouts and microgreens indoors is a straightforward and rewarding endeavor. With the right conditions and care, you can enjoy a continuous supply of fresh greens, enhancing both your meals and your gardening skills.

The Lebanese, White Squash is a favorite amongst many home gardeners. Most would recommend planting 2-4 bushes to feed a family throughout the season, while for smaller families or couples, 2 plants would be plenty. It really depends on how much squash you love to eat and whether or not you're growing other varieties at the same time. We do however recommend planting at least two plants for better pollination. The better the pollination, the better the fruit count! It's been reported that some gardeners have experienced up to 15 fruits per plant, however, that is on the high side. Most plants will produce 4-6 fruit, again depending on the pollination and other variables that come into play. There's just not an exact answer for this. You're almost at the mercy of mother nature on this, but most would agree it's a great producer! They're better picked when young and tender unless you're planning on stuffing them, then baking. In that case, they are let to grow larger, again, which will keep the plant from producing more fruit if you don't harvest regularly from them. So the bottom line is, if you want more fruit, harvest more regularly and when the squash is young and tender. This will send signals to the plant to bloom and flower again to keep reproducing. Generally, this plant will get 2-3 feet high, but regular fertilizing would, of course, alter these numbers as well. If your soil is in good condition with lots of healthy organic matter, you should have no problem getting plants that reach this size. May we suggest growing on black plastic for weed & insect control?

    Sunflower, Evening Sun Flowers

    From $299 USD
    View details

    Description

The Evening Sun Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a striking annual plant that can enhance any garden with its vibrant colors and unique characteristics. This variety is particularly noted for its multi-colored blooms, which can range from deep red to golden yellow, creating a stunning visual display. The plant typically grows to a height of 5 to 7 feet, making it a prominent feature in garden landscapes.

One of the key benefits of the Evening Sun Sunflower is its ability to attract pollinators. Studies have shown that sunflowers are highly effective at drawing in bees and butterflies, which are essential for the pollination of many garden plants. In fact, a single sunflower can attract up to 20 different species of pollinators, thereby enhancing the biodiversity of the garden ecosystem.

In terms of cultivation, the Evening Sun Sunflower thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is recommended to plant seeds after the last frost date, as sunflowers are sensitive to cold temperatures. The seeds should be spaced approximately 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for adequate growth and airflow. Once established, these sunflowers require minimal maintenance, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Furthermore, the Evening Sun Sunflower is known for its resilience. It can tolerate drought conditions once established, which is particularly beneficial in regions with variable rainfall. Research indicates that sunflowers can survive with as little as 1 inch of water per week, making them a sustainable choice for water-conscious gardeners.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, Evening Sun Sunflowers also have practical uses. The seeds produced by these plants are edible and can be harvested for consumption. They are rich in nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium, and selenium, contributing to a healthy diet.
